With VR and 3D technologies, producers and theatre groups can benefit from the digital twin of a specific scene on the stage or even the entire theatre building. With 360 panorama images, one can produce virtual tours and virtual plans in a virtual setting. In addition to virtual reality, one can also use 3D photogrammetry to record coloured 3D point clouds that can accurately be used for virtual management, such as building construction, emergency response, floor planning, stage design and scene reproduction. On a broader scope, these digital twins can be used to reshape the audience’s experience in performance, including live presentation, live presentation with digital, and digital-only performance. Digitalising the stage design can also protect the creative team’s confidentiality and IP when a performance is archived.
Data Collection
The Civetta is used to capture 360×180° HDR panorama images for indoor and outdoor areas, perfectly suitable for digitally replicating classrooms, hallway, physical buildings, and outdoor scenes. The VR tour and 3D models captured by the Civetta, including geographical location and measurement data, are essentials metadata for developing the digital twin portfolios. The I-Detics photogrammetry camera is used to develop a customised digital capture system for documents and historic files of the public sectors.
Through capturing HDRi images, the creative team can then use it for rendering, CG and other post-production. As mentioned previously, a high-quality virtual performance might need the HDRi source from the initial stage of the theatre or opera house. As Civetta has 230 megapixels, its images are precise enough to be used for entertainment purposes, such as film making and advertisement design.
Data Management
All data captured can be stored and managed in the Visual Asset Management System. The system combines complex measuring techniques and advanced data processing with a user-friendly interface and various options for individual system customisation. The result is a highly flexible, high-performance system delivering easily understood condition information straight to the user. Along with the image and 3D models captured in the field, other digital assets are collectively managed in the Visual Asset Management System VAM2 provided by Weiss AG.
A comprehensive digital twin of the cultural heritage can be produced via the VAM2. A multidisciplinary group can work collaboratively to support the development and use of digital heritage files. 2D/3D data of the heritage can be captured over time for comparison, analysis and evaluation purposes.

Reduce Risk
With the VAM2, users can visually foresee the stage conditions and design scenes on a virtual stage. Different stakeholders can review the design concept and pre-installation draft throughout the process and update and visualise the relationship between various visual assets, regardless of their file type or size. Each scene of a musical/opera/performance can be documented with the Civetta quickly, along with their measurement data and location of the objects with other objects in the scene. Transparency and real-time updates can reduce errors and unnecessary costs.
IP & Licensing Protection
Civetta and VAM2 help to accurately document archived stage design and scene settings, which can register IP and licenses. Artists and producers can commercially sell their plans to other companies while protecting their rights and interests. The stage’s size and location are related to audiences, as well as the scene-setting on the stage, can be documented via 360 panorama images or 3D colour models. These visual assets recorded on the scene during the preparation can be combined with other essential documents such as performance recording, soundtracks, scripts and other marketing materials as a digital portfolio. The performance company can sell it to other companies or groups for performance duplications or productions.
